Jane Addams Day is celebrated on December 10th of each year. The holiday pays tribute to Addams’ social activism and her acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931, one of the most prestigious awards in the modern world.
Jane Addams fought for women’s rights and improving the lives of underprivileged communities in the Chicago area during the turn of the twentieth century. She helped create the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and the Hull House in Chicago. Her efforts made it possible for women to have a say in political discourse and helped improve the social opportunities for disadvantaged communities nationwide. Her work is still held in high regard today and is often viewed as an inspiration to feminists worldwide.
