International Sloth Day is celebrated on October 20th to honor one of the most adorable creatures on the planet—the sloth! Established in 2010, a non-profit organization in Columbia called the AIUNAU Foundation created this holiday for these lovable animals. This unofficial holiday brings education and awareness about sloths and their life cycles. It also raises awareness for other South and Central American animals.

If you’ve ever heard the expression, “you’re as slow as a sloth!” then you probably know that sloths move incredibly slow. They spend a lot of their time hanging on tree limbs and other greenery. Sloths have two layers of fur containing fungi, algae, and insects that work in symbiosis. That’s why some sloths have green fur, which coincidentally helps them blend in the wild—but it may do more than that. Studies have shown that sloth fur has components that could fight human diseases and cancers!
