International Animation Day is celebrated on October 28 each year to showcase the artists, technicians, and animators who create animated movies and shows for our entertainment. In 2002, the International Animated Film Association created this holiday to commemorate the first public viewing of a cartoon in 1892. Charles-Émile Reynaud played three cartoons for the first time at the Grévin Museum in Paris using his patented Théâtre Optique projector.

Animation has come a long way since then. In 1923, Walt Disney and his brother opened Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, CA, where his cartoon mouse became an icon. In 1955, a show about a little green clay figure named Gumby and his horse introduced the world to clay animation, and in 1995, Pixar released the first computer-animated feature, Toy Story, featuring the voices of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, among other talents. Today, you can see animated films and television series that highlight various animation techniques from ultra-realistic to “simple” hand-drawn characters.
