Did you know that the chocolate cake, as we think of it today, was created in 1765? Before then, chocolate was consumed in America primarily as a beverage. Eliza Leslie, a popular Philadelphia cookbook author, published the first chocolate cake recipe in 1847. Her recipe used chopped chocolate inserted into a plain sponge. Other prolific authors Maria Parloa and Sarah Tyson Rorer also made contributions to the development of the chocolate cake. In the late 1920s, a molasses company called O. Duff and Sons created the first boxed cake mix.
