World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is celebrated annually on the 27th of October. The day is set aside to build global awareness of the challenges faced in preserving audiovisual materials like moving images and sound recordings.

We lose many sound recordings and moving images because of technologies becoming obsolete, natural decay, and neglect. Several years ago, global organizations like UNESCO felt that even more audiovisual materials would be lost if people did not take concerted and more substantial action. As a result, the organization set aside World Day for Audiovisual Heritage to highlight the importance of preserving audiovisual documents as a crucial part of identity, emphasizing the need for urgent measures.

How to Celebrate World Day for Audiovisual Heritage

UNESCO works with governments, organizations, and communities all over the world, promoting various activities. You could observe the day by attending special film screenings or conferences, panel discussions, and public talks about the importance of preserving audiovisual material. Some organizations hold competitions like logo contests to promote the day, while others organize local programs that combine the efforts of TV and radio stations, audiovisual societies, and national film archives.
