Persons Day is an unofficial Canadian holiday celebrated on the 18th of October each year. The day was established in 1979 to commemorate the Edwards v. Canada case, more commonly referred to as The Persons Case, a famous Canadian constitutional case held on the 18th of October, fifty years earlier.

During the start of the 1900s, Canadian men outnumbered women. This statistic resulted in increased prostitution and alcohol abuse. The state of the country motivated women to obtain roles in politics in an attempt to fix society. While Alberta passed legislation in 1916 that gave women the right to vote, the Act included the word ‘persons,’ which, at the time, did not legally include women. However, thanks to the suit Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Muir Edward, Irene Parlby, and Nellie McClung filed in 1920, Canada’s highest court of appeal eventually rectified this, granting women a place in the senate and giving them more rights and equality.
