National Flag of Canada Day is celebrated every year on February 15 to honour the famous red and white maple leaf flag and the date Gaetan Secours raised the flag on Parliament Hill for the first time. In 1958, Canadians wanted a new flag that wasn’t based on the UK flag. At that time, Lester Pearson was the Prime Minister, and during his mandate, he promised a new flag but hadn’t decided on the design.

The flag’s creator was George Stanley, who suggested country’s traditional colours – or white and red – and the maple leaf because it was already known as a Canadian symbol. All agreed that the new flag should be visible from a distance, simple, and memorable.
