Merchant Navy Veterans Day is celebrated on the 3rd of September each year throughout Canada. The day was set aside to remember and celebrate the sacrifices and achievements of Canadians during the Second World War. Though when most people think of war, they often picture those in military uniform, the people who served in the country’s Merchant Navy played an essential role as well.

Canada’s Merchant Navy was a fleet of transport ships responsible for transporting desperately needed personnel, equipment, fuel, and goods to Europe and the rest of the world. Since these supplies were vital to the war effort, these ships were prime targets for the enemy. In fact, many of the brave men and women who served often found themselves thrust into the middle of the fierce Battle of the Atlantic—a struggle between the Germans and the Allies for control of the Atlantic Ocean.
