A Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval occurs on July 28 each year. In 2003, the British government acknowledged the forced departure of the Acadian people from present-day Nova Scotia. With their acknowledgment of these events, the Queen of England declared the Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval to honour the men and women forced from their homes and exiled to the then thirteen colonies. This forced departure resulted from the fighting between British forces and their French and Indian counterparts.

This day of remembrance came into being when a Cajun attorney attempted to sue the British Royal Family for refusing to acknowledge the actions of the British government at the time. This lawsuit developed due to a failed response of then King George III to a petition put forth by Acadians to acknowledge their exodus from their homeland. After thirteen years of deliberation, the Canadian government issued a royal decree recognizing the plight and misfortunes of the Acadians at the hands of the British government.
