Easter Sunday is celebrated on a different Sunday each year but always in March or April, and May in the Eastern church. Easter Sunday is both a religious holiday and a secular holiday. Religious (Christian) celebrations of Easter commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the secular version involves the Easter bunny bringing eggs, chocolates, and small gifts for the family to enjoy.

It also follows the Jewish calendar, falling on the Sunday after the last full Passover moon, which is why it changes each year. It’s a huge celebration for most people around the world and an official holiday that does not affect banking or postal schedules much since it falls on a Sunday.

Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover by its name. In Greek and Latin, Easter is called Pascha, and derives from Aramaic Pascha, and Hebrew Pesach.

Historically, Easter was a Pagan holiday celebrating new beginnings and spring in the northern hemisphere. Early civilizations believed that the egg was the creator of all life on earth and that the Easter egg and spring’s life-giving season were worthy of a celebration. The origin of Easter Sunday is muddy—some scholars trace the first Easter festivities to Germany while others say Ancient Greece.
